OVER-HOverheight Vehicle Detection System

Detects Overheight Vehicles Before They Reach Road Infrastructure

OVER-H is an Overheight Vehicle Detection System that checks vehicle height using a laser sensor on road sections with clearance limits, automatically reads the license plates of vehicles exceeding the defined limit, and warns the driver through a Variable Message Sign.

It monitors vehicles approaching tunnels, underpasses, bridges, enclosed parking entrances, and similar areas with height restrictions; when a vehicle exceeds the limit, it generates an alarm, identifies the license plate and vehicle type, and transfers the warning to the relevant VMS display.

Overheight Vehicle Detection System

OVER-H is an electronic control system that automatically verifies whether vehicles comply with a defined height limit and generates a driver warning for vehicles exceeding the limit. While the laser sensor checks vehicle height, the license plate recognition system identifies the vehicle’s license plate and type.

The Integration Module combines information from these two sources within the same incident record and enables the warning to be displayed on the VMS. The vehicle’s license plate is shown on the VMS together with a message directing the driver to the control point, helping prevent damage to road infrastructure.

LASER HEIGHT MEASUREMENTHEIGHT LIMIT 4.0 m4.3 mlimit exceeded
01 The laser sensor measures vehicle height
The vehicle approaches the clearance control point; the laser sensor measures vehicle height and compares it with the clearance limit defined for the road.

02 An alarm is generated if the limit is exceeded
If the vehicle is above the defined limit, an alarm is generated; the license plate recognition system identifies the vehicle’s license plate and type.

The VMS displays the vehicle’s license plate and a warning directing it to the control point, informing the driver before the vehicle reaches the restricted-clearance area.

System Components

01
Laser Sensor
Measures the height of vehicles passing the control point; generates an alarm when a vehicle exceeds the defined limit and transmits the information to the Integration Module.
02
License Plate Recognition System
Detects the license plates and types of vehicles passing the control point; in an overheight event, the relevant license plate record is matched with the laser alarm.
03
Integration Module
Combines data from the laser sensor and license plate recognition system under a common incident record, prepares the warning message, and transfers it to the VMS.
04
Variable Message Sign
Displays the overheight vehicle’s license plate, the clearance warning, and directions to the control point.

What does OVER-H do?

From height measurement to license-plate-based driver warning.

Laser-Based Height Control The highest point of the vehicle passing the control point is automatically compared with the defined clearance limit; no driver declaration or manual observation is required.
Automatic Overheight Alarm A real-time alarm is generated when the limit is exceeded.
Automatic License Plate and Vehicle Type Detection The vehicle’s license plate and type are identified and added to the incident record.
Laser-Plate Matching The height violation is matched with the correct vehicle and license plate record using detection time and monitoring location.
License-Plate-Based Driver Warning The VMS displays the license plate, height warning, and message directing the driver to the control point.
Direction to a Control Point The vehicle can be directed to a roadside inspection area, safe waiting zone, or alternative route.
Different Clearance Limits The monitored height can be configured according to the clearance limit of the road or structure on which the system is installed.
Central Monitoring and Recording Information such as license plate, vehicle type, alarm, date/time, location, and VMS warning can be monitored and reported centrally.

Key Features

Advantages

OVER-H detects overheight vehicles before they reach road structures with clearance limits.

Automatically detects vehicles exceeding the clearance limit
Identifies the violating vehicle’s license plate and type
Combines laser measurement and license plate information under the same incident
Warns the driver directly through the VMS display
Makes the target vehicle clear by displaying its license plate
Directs the vehicle to a control point
Aims to reduce collision risk in tunnels, bridges, and underpasses
Supports the prevention of damage to road infrastructure
Reduces road closures that could affect traffic flow
Supports intervention processes for road operations and safety teams

Frequently Asked Questions

What does OVER-H do? +

It checks vehicle height using a laser sensor on roads with clearance limits, reads the license plate of an overheight vehicle, and warns the driver through a Variable Message Sign.

How is an overheight violation detected? +

The laser sensor measures vehicle height and compares it with the clearance limit defined in the system. An alarm is generated if the limit is exceeded.

Does it read the vehicle’s license plate automatically? +

Yes. The license plate recognition system automatically detects the license plates of vehicles passing the control point.

Can the vehicle type be identified? +

Yes. In addition to license plate information, the license plate recognition system can transmit vehicle type information to the Integration Module.

How are the laser sensor and license plate information matched? +

Information from the laser sensor and license plate recognition system is combined in the Integration Module, and the overheight alarm is matched with the correct vehicle and license plate record.

How is the driver informed? +

The violating vehicle’s license plate and the relevant warning message are displayed on the Variable Message Sign.

Which information can be displayed on the VMS? +

The vehicle’s license plate, information that the height limit has been exceeded, an instruction to stop, or directions to the control point can be displayed.

Is OVER-H a penalty system? +

Its primary function is to detect vehicles exceeding the clearance limit and warn drivers before they reach the road structure. Use of records in other administrative processes depends on the project scope.

Can different clearance limits be defined for different roads? +

Yes. The monitored height value can be defined according to the clearance limit of the road or structure where the system is installed.

Which road structures can it protect? +

It can be used for tunnels, underpasses, bridges, enclosed parking entrances, and other structures with height restrictions.

Can it direct the driver to an alternative route? +

Where suitable road and VMS infrastructure is available, the driver can be shown directions to a control point or alternative route.

What are its main components? +

It consists of a laser sensor, license plate recognition system, Integration Module, and Variable Message Sign.
